Child Hunger and Food Insecurity

Child Hunger and food insecurity refers to a lack of daily access to safe and nutritious food that's needed to survive for a child. Hunger is pain-like sensation the body experiences. Child hunger goes beyond a simple feeling of being hungry. It refers to a child's consistent lack of access to enough nutritious food to meet their growth and development needs. Major causes of Child Hunger are:

Poverty: People living in poverty are earning less than $2.5 per day. Families living below the poverty line are often unable to feed their children because of limited access to food. It becomes major cause of hunger and food insecurity, But even when food is available, it' not always the healthy food required for a nutritious diet and growth of children.

Inflation: Impacts poor families with limited resources, with rising food prices, families are forced to buy cheaper, less nutritious food, compromising children's health and development.

Natural disasters: like floods, wildfires, droughts, and earthquakes wreak havoc on agriculture. Crops and farmland are destroyed, leading to a disrupted food supply. leaving families struggling to afford or access food for their children. Children in poverty-stricken regions are more vulnerable to the effects of natural disasters on food security.

Disease, war or other disruptive events: Whether it' an ongoing civil war or an infectious disease outbreak, events that damage infrastructure and disrupts the food supply chain leads to shortages that become cause of Child hunger.

How Much to End World Hunger?

The World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that to reach the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger by 2030 would cost $40 billion per year.

While the cost may seem astronomical, let's take a closer look at a global fact:

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO): estimates that roughly one-third (33%) of all food produced globally is wasted each year.

(FAO) reports one-third 33% of food wasted globally, is worth staggering One trillion US dollars ($1,000 billion).

Food waste costs a staggering amount, leaving many hungry. Let's reduce food waste and use those resources to ensure children and families facing hunger crisis and food insecurity have access to the food they need to survive.
